Research Services
Individual researchers are welcome outside public opening hours and are encouraged to visit on Mondays, when the museum is closed to the public. Space is limited and booking is essential. Email or ring us on +44 (0)20 7679 9000. It will help us prepare if you can search in advance and tell us the museum numbers of the objects you wish to see (normally up to 10 objects per day). If you wish to conduct analysis on objects please consult our analysis policy and complete an analysis request form. Requests are considered by a committee, and you should allow three months for consideration.
Access
If you require assistance with access, please contact us in advance of your visit and we will do our best to help. We may be able to arrange parking for you in the main university quadrangle (off Gower Street, see ). There is a banner over the entrance to the museum, which is located on the first floor of the DMS Watson library. The main entrance to the museum is up a flight of 28 steps. For step-free access, please enter via the DMS Watson library to the left of the museum. Staff at the security desk just inside the library entrance will give you access through the security gates. Take the lift up to the first floor, go through the doors and turn left. There is an intercom for access to the museum. The larger lift has a car of 1,700mm wide by 1,000mm deep with a 900mm wide door, which may not be accesssible for larger wheelchairs or mobility scooters.
Inside the museum visitors must negotiate two steps to reach the second gallery: a wheelchair lift is available.
Lighting within the museum is low to protect the objects, and we can offer visitors the loan of torches. Seating is available.
A Changing Places facility is available on the ground floor of the DMS Watson library. Please speak to a member of staff if you need to borrow a RADAR key.
