The reconstruction of colour for the mastabas in Tarkhan The only detailed description of the traces of original colour is that for mastaba 1060: Some pre-eminence was evidently assigned to a recess which is apparently just to the south of the centre of the mastaba, for while both on the east and west sides, in the recess which were sufficiently well-preserved, the central panel shows traces of red paint (...). The mastaba was covered all over with a coating of white-painted mud plaster (...) (Wainwright, in Petrie 1913: 13). The reconstruction of the elaborate paintings on the outside of the mastabas is based on parallels found at Saqqara. The Saqqara tombs are slightly later in date (Emery 1958: pl. I-III). |
