The Graduate Diploma in Archaeology helps students prepare for Masters level study in archaeology.
The Graduate Diploma in Archaeology is designed to give students two options:
- as a stand-alone route, it provides an academic qualification for students who already hold a first degree in non-archaeology subjects and would like to have a further qualification or a conversion to an archaeology qualification;
- as a foundation year, it provides the preparation for an MA degree in archaeology for those students who hold a first degree in non-archaeology subjects.
The Graduate Diploma at the °×С½ãÂÛ̳ Institute of Archaeology is fully integrated within the teaching programme of the Institute: Graduate Diploma students take a number of undergraduate courses and lectures, which follow the normal timetable of undergraduate teaching. This is unlike many other university diplomas, and makes the Graduate Diploma at the °×С½ãÂÛ̳ Institute of Archaeology unique.
Modules
Full time students take a total of eight 15-credit undergraduate modules; part-time students take four 15-credit modules in Year 1, and four 15-credit modules in Year 2.
Students are required to take the following two Core modules. ÌýBoth run in Term 1. ÌýPart-time students normally take both in Year 1. Ìý
The six optional modules are chosen from second and third year undergraduate modules. Further details of modules are available here. ÌýPlease note that not all options run every year.Ìý
Assessment
Assessment is normally through coursework which is undertaken throughout the year. Ìý
Proceeding to the MA or MSc at the °×С½ãÂÛ̳ Institute of Archaeology
Whilst 40% is the minimum requirement to be awarded the Graduate Diploma, those students wishing to proceed to a Master's programme of study at the °×С½ãÂÛ̳ Institute of Archaeology mustÌý normally achieve an overall average mark of 65% or higher in order to be allowed to proceed to the Master's programme.

To be considered for the Graduate Diploma you must complete an admissions application form. Further details are available onÌýthe Applying for Graduate Taught StudyÌýat °×С½ãÂÛ̳ website.
Your application must include:
- A completed application form
- Two references
- Copies of your transcript
- An English Language Qualification if English is not your first language.
Once the Department has received your admissions application you will be sent an email confirming receipt.
Once a decision has been made on your application you will be sent an informal email letting you know the outcome, normally within two weeks of your interview. An official offer letter will be sent by College Admissions.
Applying online
Please note that if you apply online your application will not be uploaded until both referees have submitted their references. You can check the progress of your online application form at any point during the application process.
College Admissions can experience delays during busy times (especially during January to April). If you are also applying for funding please contact Lisa Daniel to confirm whether you should send your application direct to the Department.
References
Ideally you should be submitting two academic references; however we will accept one reference from an employer. If you have been out of academic life for more than five years we would accept two employer references if an academic reference is impossible to obtain.
Transcript
A transcript is a breakdown of marks you obtained in each course/module you took at University.
Your University will be able to provide you with this. If you are currently studying please provide a transcript of the past two years marks.
If your transcripts are not in English you will need to provide an official translation. This can either be through your University, the British Council, the British Embassy or an official translator.
If you are a current °×С½ãÂÛ̳ student please print off your current marks from your PORTICO record.
