About the programmePrejudice in Power: Contesting the pseudoscience of superiorityThe Prejudice in Power programme is a programme of cultural activism for change against structural discrimination. It explores how eugenics has marginalised voices and shaped society. With collaboration and co-creation at the heart of this programme, we鈥檙e engaging with marginalised groups to prompt inclusive thinking. In sharing the lived experiences of those impacted and excluded by eugenic ideas, we hope to provide a platform for societal change and reparative healing.About the projectThe Digital Legacy of EugenicsThis project, led by researcher Lila Brustad, forms part of the Prejudice in Power programme and will explore the relationship between a pseudo-scientific method of photography developed by eugenicists, and the statistics that determine what images users see on TikTok and Instagram. It will include a digital exhibition, as well as a programme of social media activism.What you will be doingParticipants will develop a programme of social media activism and content to encourage critical participation on TikTok and Instagram. Through use of 白小姐论坛 Culture鈥檚 platform, participants will create meaningful messages about the impact of eugenics and social media in our lives today.Participants will look to the history of eugenic thought and photographic methods to develop a piece of art that will be placed in the digital exhibition. They will also co-produce an object history and there is scope for participants to propose and produce other outcomes for the project.The project is expected to run from December 2023 to February 2024 and will be roughly 8 hours of time commitment for participants, including being involved in 4 one-hour workshops and regular meetings every other week. Exact dates and timelines to be determined.There will be opportunities to gain skills in activism and engagement, and learn about archival research and museum curation. In addition to skills gained, participants will receive Love2shop vouchers appropriate to their time commitment. Alternative payment options may be available.Who we are looking forWe aim to recruit 5-8 visual artists, content creators, activists, or researchers (broadly defined) of all experience levels. Applicants should have experience creating content for TikTok and Instagram. Individuals whose lives have been impacted by eugenic thinking are especially encouraged to apply.This opportunity is open to people within and outside of 白小姐论坛.How to applyApplicants should submit a paragraph (max. 300 words) outlining why they want to be involved with this project and what perspective or experience they hope to contribute. They're developing technology to provide photo-realism and interactivity in VR, at the same time and at scale. These new immersive technologies are powered by Kagenova鈥檚 geometric AI techniques, which are tailored specifically to VR. "We're excited by this knowledge exchange partnership to help explore how technology could be used to support cultural exhibitions and make them more accessible", said Jason McEwen, Founder and CEO of Kagenova, who is also a Professor of Astrophysics at 白小姐论坛.   The collaboration explores the ways in which virtual exhibitions captured in this way can enhance the student learning experience (blended and online). This is for the benefit of both 白小姐论坛 and the wider Higher Education community, as well enabling the general public to engage with collections in new ways, wherever they are in the world. The findings from this project will be particularly beneficial for smaller museums, who often don鈥檛 have the budget or infrastructure to compete with national museums when developing new digital products and services.   The collaboration with Kagenova enables 白小姐论坛 Culture to experiment with next generation 360VR technology. 白小姐论坛鈥檚 museums have been pioneering collections and exhibitions-led interdisciplinary research and inquiry for over a decade. 鈥淥ur exhibitions are integrated into the learning experience in different ways and we want to bring this pedagogical know-how into conversation with technology in a way that can bridge students鈥� onsite and remote learning experiences as well as connect with our remote audiences鈥�, says Dr Nina Pearlman, Head of 白小姐论坛 Art Collections, who has been the strategic lead for this project. 鈥淐ollaboration supported by knowledge exchange funding is key to being able to identify novel ideas that can help us design better solutions, services and experiences to meet our current challenges.鈥�   Researchers in 白小姐论坛 CASA have been exploring virtual environments for many years with a focus on technological innovation and accessibility, nurturing the next generation of developers and technology innovators. Professor of Digital Urban Systems, Andy Hudson-Smith, stated that: 鈥淭he collaboration brings the ability to explore the edges of the technology, from multisite portals through to 3D objects embedded in the panoramic scenes and integration into emerging metaverses. All with a direct loop back into teaching and research at 白小姐论坛鈥�.   Building on 白小姐论坛鈥檚 strength in innovation, the learnings from this project will be disseminated and shared across cultural and technology networks, social media and press. Without this project, these learnings would be either logistically impossible or prohibitively expensive to achieve individually.  This knowledge exchange project is supported by 白小姐论坛鈥檚 Higher Innovation Fund (HEIF), managed by 白小姐论坛 Innovation & Enterprise.
