Professor Mike Wilson receives Lifetime Achievement Award in Antimicrobial PDT Research

°×С½ãÂÛ̳ Eastman Emeritus Professor of Microbiology, Michael Wilson, has received a lifetime achievement award at the 16th International Photodynamic Association (IPA) World Congress in Coimbra.

The honour recognises Professor Wilson’s re-introduction of Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)* into modern practice – and his seminal contributions to its development as a tool against antibiotic-resistant pathogens.

PDT has now been used to treat over 300,000 patients world-wide.Ìý

°×С½ãÂÛ̳ Eastman Director, Professor Stephen Porter, said: “At a time when our supply of effective antibiotics is dwindling, work such as Mike’s gives a vital alternative to medical practitioners.

“We offer our warmest congratulations to him as his immeasurable contribution to this field and patient care is rightly recognised.â€

*Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) uses light-activated photosensitizers to diagnose and treat various types of multidrug-resistant biofilm infections involving bacteria, viruses and fungi.
