2022 ABSW Media Fellows Announced

°×С½ãÂÛ̳ Engineering is pleased to announce our four Association of British Science Writers Media Fellows for 2022
°×С½ãÂÛ̳ is delighted to announce the return of the popular and valuable Media Fellowship Scheme. Previously run by the British Science Association, this scheme was discontinued by the BSA in 2021. However, the stewardship of scheme has now been taken on by the Association of British Science Writers.
The ABSW Media Fellowships provide a unique opportunity for practising scientists, clinicians and engineers to spend two to six weeks working at the heart of a media outlet such as the Guardian, BBC Breakfast or Buzzfeed.
Previous °×С½ãÂÛ̳ fellows under the BSA scheme includeÌýDr Lena Ciric, who worked at the BBC,ÌýÌýwho worked at the I newspaper, andÌýProf. Clare ElwellÌýwho worked at the Financial Times
Our four media fellows for 2022 are Dr Stijn Van Ewick from °×С½ãÂÛ̳ Civil, Environmental, and Geomatic Engineering, Dr Charlotte Maughan Jones from °×С½ãÂÛ̳ Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering, Dr Maria Perez Ortiz from °×С½ãÂÛ̳ Computer Science and Dr Leonie Tanczer from °×С½ãÂÛ̳ Science, Technology, Engineering and Public Policy.

Previously she was Senior Research Fellow at the same department andÌýResearch Associate at the University of Cambridge. Her research focusesÌýon developing responsible AI models with an interdisciplinaryÌýperspective and connections to social and environmental sustainability,Ìýhaving worked in the last 10 years in biomedicine, sustainableÌýagriculture, climate change and environmental modelling, neuroscienceÌýand educational technology. She is generally interested in assessing theÌýimpact that such technologies have on our social and environmentalÌýecosystems, and aims to include such assessment in the ideation andÌýdesign process, to help ensure technologies remain beneficial andÌýsustainable.
Dr. Perez-Ortiz is currently working on bringing sustainability andÌýresponsible innovation topics to the computer science arena. She hasÌýrecently joined a committee to improve education for sustainability atÌý°×С½ãÂÛ̳ and is program co-lead of the first MSc program on AI forÌýSustainable Development, as well as module leader of two courses at °×С½ãÂÛ̳:ÌýÌýi) AI for Sustainable Development and ii) Transparent, Accountable andÌýResponsible AI. As part of this line of work, she is also organisingÌýscientific events surrounding the ecosystemic challenges that arise withÌýthese technologies, and aiming to introduce broader socio-technical andÌýsocio-ecological perspectives to the field of AI.
