Description
- To give students insight into how a true collaborativeÌýpalaeobiological research project works inside the departmental environment and enable them to organise and carry out their own research.
- To introduce students to the process of writing in a scientific paper format, complete with review and revision.
- To give students experience of researching a palaeontological topic, critically appraising recent work, and producing a synthesis of this as an oral presentation.
By the end of the course, students should be familiar with:
- scientific literature searches, review writing and referencing.
- critical evaluation of competing lines of evidence.
- carrying out original research, involving data collection and collation, use of computerized analytical packages, relevant statistics (e.g. the projects often involve the use of R packages to analyze phylogenetic, morphometric, biogeographic data etc.).
- writing a scientific paper and formatting it for a journal.
- creating and presenting a talk suitable for an academic audience.
