Description
Students are embedded within an active research group carrying out original studies at the frontiers of science. Projects are offered throughout all disciplines and research themes within the Chemistry department and interdisciplinary projects are offered in collaboration with other units and institutions. Both fundamental and applied research projects are available.
Throughout the module students will (a) develop and demonstrate a background knowledge of the research topic and conduct an in-depth literature survey of previous work, (b) engage in original research under the supervision of a primary supervisor and other senior members of the research team, (c) participate in regular meetings or other reviews of the research project progress in context with other activities within the group, (d) prepare and present scientific reports and public presentations of the work.
Students will also take part a Symposium for Advanced Research Projects in Chemistry (SARPIC), where they will present their research results to a wide audience including undergraduate and postgraduate students, members of the academic and technical staff, and external participants. The project reports take the form of potentially publishable documents and indeed previous reports have led to scientific publications, patents or other forms of public communication.
