Description
Students are embedded within an active research group in the laboratory of an approved °×С½ãÂÛ̳ affiliate European university, carrying out original studies at the frontiers of science. Students enrol in their foreign host university in late September and return to °×С½ãÂÛ̳ by May, in order to defend their research in an oral exam and present their work orally along with the CHEM0058 cohort.
Throughout the module students will (a) develop and demonstrate a background knowledge of the research topic and conduct an in-depth literature survey of previous work, (b) engage in original research under the supervision of a primary supervisor and other senior members of the research team, (c) participate in regular meetings or other reviews of the research project progress in context with other activities within the group, (d) prepare and present scientific reports and public presentations of the work.
A special symposium (SARPIC: Symposium for Advanced Research Projects in Chemistry) is organised at the end of the examination period in which students present their research results to a wide audience including undergraduate and postgraduate students, members of the academic and technical staff, and external participants. The project reports take the form of potentially publishable documents and indeed previous reports have led to scientific publications, patents or other forms of public communication.
