Description
This is a project-based module open to third year BSc Architecture students in Term 1.
In this module, students are asked to investigate the themes of a Design Unit by designing a speculative building, installation, device, or other mode of investigation to progress the design methodologies developed in their second year. The investigation can extend beyond the field of architecture into, for example, art practice, literature, philosophy, psychology, sociology, science, or technology. Students are, however, advised to always examine ideas critically from outside the field of architecture to find their design implications. Some ideas will suggest the gathering of empirical data, making analytical studies and conducting observations of people, place, context, and materials that are appropriate to the project at hand.
To support the design modules, students are required to participate in media skills classes and design unit-led computing workshops and seminars. Students are required to demonstrate the skills gained within their portfolio of work, as well as how they are a valuable and critical tool in the development of the design work.
