The overall aim for the module is for you to develop and appreciate the impact that cancer as a disease has on society - psychological, financial and cultural. As one in two people born after 1960 will develop cancer the burden to society is immense. Themes included in the module are history of cancer medicine, medical anthropology, health economics, impact of cancer on the arts (including music, art, literature, film), cancer patient psychology and palliative care. It is delivered by world leading multidisciplinary researchers and clinicians from across the °×С½ãÂÛ̳ campus.
There has been a paradigm shift on how cancer patients are treated in recent years including the introduction of immunotherapy and personalised cancer medicine. Through these improvements in diagnosis and treatment over the last 20 years cancer is becoming a chronic illness that individuals live with rather than die of. This will be explored with an emphasis on how we might change the public’s perception of a cancer diagnosis.
