Description
This module introduces concepts related to data visualization, and develops practical skills in visualization. Specific themes include:
- Principles of data visualization
- Types of visualization
- Meaning and mis-representation in visualisations
- Critical assessment of existing visualisations
- Acquiring, processing and preparing data
- Creating basic and more advanced visualisations using appropriate software
- Geographic Information Systems – principles
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the course, students will:
- Recognise different types of data visualisation
- Understand the need to use visualisations appropriately
- Qualitatively assess ‘good’ and ‘bad’ examples of data visualisation
- Be able to prepare data in order to load in to appropriate software
- Use an appropriate programming language to produce a variety of types of data visualisation
- Be able to choose appropriate visualisation approaches given different type so data
- Be able to use GIS software to produce maps
Compulsory module on the MSc in Digital Humanities, and the MSc in Knowledge, Information and Data Science.
Optional module on the MA in Digital Humanities.
