Description
This module will equip you with the skills with which to examine your final design proposal. You will be able to determine the key technical issues involved, research these and then integrate the research into a creative design process in this module.
The course delivery includes lectures, seminars, structures and environment clinics. There will also be tutorials with unit tutors, unit technology tutors, structural engineering tutors, environmental design tutors and other consultants appropriate to the specialist areas of technical research undertaken.
The lectures series, entitled ‘Making Buildings’, is presented by practitioners who are pioneering architects, engineers, artists, and designers who have completed (or are in the process of completing) landmark buildings, predominantly sited in London.
They will describe how technically challenging ideas for buildings at a variety of scales, topics and complexities were resolved. An extensive question and answer session is held after each lecture, chaired by the module coordinator. This reflects on methods of construction, prototyping, detailed design and onsite construction resolution.
Your objective is to gain a higher-level understanding of the key technical ideas in your design proposal, including the synthesis of verified strategies for the Structural and Environmental design as demonstrated in the major building proposal.
Key technical issues may relate to the construction, assembly, materiality, lighting, energy, ventilation, acoustic, water management, ground works, sustainability, integration of systems and services, entropy, advanced technologies, human wellbeing, fire safe design, principles and benefits of the circular economy, design life-cycle and environmental impact as appropriate to the design project.Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý
