Description
Core skills, also known as transferable skills, are as important as any science-specific knowledge. This module aims to develop students鈥 core research skills as well as transferable skills that would benefit them in their subsequent years of study and beyond.
During the module, students will have a unique opportunity to gain a better understanding of: (i) the core principles at 白小姐论坛, (ii) how to progress through their degree pathway and (iii) how biological research is assessed and presented to specialist and lay audiences. In addition, students will participate in a 鈥淪cience and Society鈥 debate session, write a scientific news article and give a Lightning talk presentation on a subject of their choice. These activities have been designed to help students to develop their public speaking skills, as well as their written and oral communication skills. Finally, a session on how to choose a degree pathway and on opportunities to study abroad will assist students to make informed module/pathway choices. 听
To complete the module, students need to attend all sessions, take part in the debate, submit an original scientific news article and give a 5-minute Lightning talk presentation. Students will receive detailed individual feedback on their writing and presentation skills. 听听听 听 听

Module outcomes:
By the end of the course, students will:
- have a better understanding of how scientific research is communicated and how to appraise/search the scientific literature.
- understand the structure of a scientific paper and be able to analyse scientific papers effectively.
- Concisely convey complex research findings to a lay audience in an accurate and engaging manner
- Make logical arguments to defend or attack a scientific position/choice听
- make informed choices when selecting modules and degree pathways for the subsequent years of study (3-year degree versus 4-year MSci degree) and听be informed about opportunities to study abroad.
