Description
Innovations in infrastructure systems is an increasingly prominent topic in public policy, as governments face the urgent need mitigate and adapt to climate change and support sustainable development. The Foundations in Climate, Innovation and Sustainability Policy module will provide an introduction to the ways in which innovations across different types of infrastructure (physical, environmental, social) are being used to address these challenges and help students to explain how their governance has evolved over time with technical, social and economic shifts.
Noting the importance of joined-up, multi-scalar governance in the face of global challenges, the module will begin to examine the institutional arrangements and governance of infrastructure systems considering the range of stakeholders that can be critical in shaping infrastructure supply and demand including local, regional and national decision-makers, architects, engineers and planners, local community groups and individual users. It will also begin to consider how technical and non-technical expertise is mobilised to plan and deliver effective, appropriate and sustainable infrastructure.
The module engages with real-world examples of cutting-edge infrastructure projects, from local to international scale, focused on climate, innovation and sustainability. It encourages students to share and develop their own knowledge in areas of topical interest. It introduces key issues for contemporary infrastructure policy through a set of ‘challenge’ topics including: affordable and clean energy; green and ecological infrastructure; and innovation for environmental and climate justice.
Students will be supported to develop strong analytical skills, to begin to critically evaluate the range of technical, policy and regulatory solutions that can be used to identify, understand and address current and future challenges in climate, innovation and sustainability.
