Description
The word humanitarian has been defined as 鈥渂eing concerned with or seeking to promote human welfare鈥. Engineering is the profession that translates science into technology.听Data听science, also referring to engineering, is transforming the efficiency and effectiveness of humanitarian crises response, preparedness, and anticipation.听Since human welfare is听connected to the promotion of human dignity and rights, humanitarian engineering and听data science refers to both short-term disaster relief (e.g., emergency response, humanitarian aid) and long-term human development (e.g., technological projects in developing countries).听This module introduces students to a range of engineering and听data-science methods that are currently used in humanitarian action and human welfare. This module covers the fundamentals of听data-driven engineering solutions and digital听data听science in the era of big听data. Students will be learning about the application of digital听data, their limitations, and ethical considerations of using them in humanitarian and development contexts.听
