Aims:
The aims of this module are to:
- Equip students with a comprehensive understanding of how foundational theories in robotics, AI, and machine learning are applied in industrial settings.
- Offer hands-on experience in addressing real-world problems provided by industry clients, fostering a professional work ethic and project management skills.
- Enhance students' abilities in navigating the research and development lifecycle, from conceptualisation to delivering industry standard solutions.
- Encourage critical evaluation of AI-based robotics systems, focusing on feasibility, performance criteria, and underlying assumptions.
- Prepare students for future industrial engagements (including group projects in Year 3 and individual projects in Year 4) by building their confidence in communication, collaboration, and leadership within AI and robotics projects.
Intended learning outcomes:
On successful completion of the module, a student will be able to:
- Effectively collaborate and communicate with industry partners, applying professional skills and behaviours in real-world contexts.
- Co-plan and execute a major group project, from initial requirement gathering to final delivery, while managing client relationships and organising resources efficiently.
- Build a comprehensive system integrating academic knowledge with external reading and research in a professional manner – this includes appropriate documentation, the commenting of code, appropriate consideration of ethics, and the use of project planning and software versioning tools.
- Articulate project methodologies, decisions, and results to both technical and non-technical audiences, ensuring clarity and impact.
- Reflect on the learning process and apply insights gained to future academic and professional endeavours.
- Convey the technical and broader impacts of the project work effectively to diverse audiences.
Indicative content:
In this module, students complete an industrial project based on work experience in the areas of: (1) robotics; (2) machine learning and AI; and (3) industrial control systems.
The module draws on the successful Industry Exchange Programme (IXN) pedagogical approach in the Department of Computer Science. The students will work in small teams, where each team works with an external industry partner to develop an innovative solution to a challenging problem defined by the project partner. These partners span various sectors including the public sector, SMEs, corporates, charities, healthcare/NHS, research institutions, and other departments and research units within °×С½ãÂÛ̳. Projects will be matched to student interests and aligned with current industry needs to ensure relevance and engagement.
Requisite conditions:
To be eligible to select this module as optional or elective, a student must be registered on a programme and year of study for which it is formally available.
