Description
The module will provide an introduction to the science of the natural environment and give our Environmental Geoscience students on overview of the processes that shape the evolution of our environment. The principal topics will be: (i) global cycles that operate in the atmosphere, hydrosphere and cryosphere and the cycling of carbon, nitrogen, water and energy; (ii) natural hazards and their impacts on human society and how these are monitored, assessed and mitigated; (iii) natural resources exploitation focused on water, minerals, and fossil fuels, and the environmental issues associated with their extraction and use.
The aims of this module are:
To gain understanding of the evolution of the natural environment
To gain understanding of the effect of natural hazards on society
To gain understanding of the effect of humans on the natural environment
To gain expertise in field data collection and laboratory analysis
To gain expertise and understanding in the statistical handling of data
