Description
This module provides a foundation of the knowledge necessary to work with medieval manuscripts in a library environment. The focus is the medieval book as object: how it was created and used in its original setting, as well as how it can now be stored, interpreted, and delivered in a digital environment. You will begin by learning techniques to identify, localise, and date different types of medieval handwriting, as well as specialised cataloguing practices. This core knowledge will then be applied to studying real-life situations, such as engagement and outreach, reader management, and curatorship. There will be opportunities to visit special collections libraries to better understand how to work with manuscripts in the flesh.
While there are no prerequisites to this course, it is fast-paced to ensure you will be prepared to work with this special kind of material. The assignment is designed so that you may be able to refer to it in job applications.
Please note: this module is capped at 20, with priority given to students on the MA Library and information Studies.
