Description
This module aims to provide the mathematical foundations and techniques for the physics streams of the Natural Sciences degree programme.ÌýÌý
The emphasis is on applications, giving you practice in mathematical manipulation and problem solving rather than rigorous proofs and derivations. You should be able to apply these mathematical ideas to a variety of scientific problems.ÌýÌý
You will be introduced to the Python programming language, which is used for examples and in assessments.Ìý
You will learn to:Ìý
[1] Be able to understand Python code and write your own short programmesÌý
[2] Investigate scientific problems with a combination of analytic and computational approachesÌý
[3] Communicate mathematical content accurately and infer scientific conclusionsÌý
The topics that you will study are:Ìý
- Complex numbersÌý
- Sequences, series, limits and convergenceÌý
- Matrices and vectorsÌý
- Partial differentiation and multivariable calculusÌý
- Integration
- 1st and 2nd order ordinary differential equationsÌý
