Description
Students work in groups to propose and design realistic engineering solutions to complex interdisciplinary engineering problems. Each scenario focuses on a civil engineering problem to improve problem-solving abilities and allow relevant information from different disciplines to be connected meaningfully and creatively. A scenario will typically contain a few hours of introductory lecture time, some tutorials to introduce tools or skills not previously covered in the curriculum (e.g. use a specific software package); some intermediate feedback sessions, supervised/unsupervised studio time and will conclude with some form of project presentation and submission.
You develop original engineering solutions for complex problems that meet a combination of societal, user, business and customer needs as appropriate. This will involve consideration of applicable health & safety, diversity, inclusion, cultural, societal, environmental and commercial matters, codes of practice and industry standards.
Learning Outcomes
- You will develop your problem-solving skills
- Apply knowledge to real engineering problems
- Select and apply appropriate materials, equipment, engineering technologies and processes, recognising their limitations
- Analyse complex problems to design engineering solutions
- Search and evaluate available data to inform the engineering decisons.
- Experience working in teams and improvingÌýyour team-working skills
- Opportunity to take on leadership roles
- Improve your technical oral presentation and writing skills
- Learn to communicate engineering ideas and concepts
- Learn and apply appropriate computational and analytical techniques to engineering problems
- Evaluate the environmental and societal impact of solutions to complex problems Ìýand minimise adverse impacts
- Function effectively as an individual, and as a member or leader of a team and evaluate the effectiveness of own and team performance
