Description
The module is comprised of 3 blocks. The first block introduces students to the nature of geographical research and practice, with special emphasis on how research is carried out, especially among those of different disciplines, and the inclusion of user communities and other stakeholders. The second block allows students to see how research is undertaken in the department, and how research is translated into wider societal impacts. The third block explores what geographers do professionally, and encourages students to think about the skills they may need / want to develop. This third block is done in conjunction with the RGS-IBG. The course content will be delivered mainly through weekly 1h lectures and weekly small group tutorials.
This module will enable you to develop your interpersonal and verbal communication skills in small group tutorials, as well as written communication skills in assessments. It will also enhance your critical thinking skills by encouraging you to challenge and debate ideas. The module also provides windows onto the real-world applicability of geographical research.
