Description
Cinema is not only an important art form but also a powerful medium for entertaining, educating, and/or indoctrinating people. At the same time, cinema is an extremely powerful way of transmitting cultural memory, reflecting or creating national mythologies and fates of individuals. Eastern Europe is a region in which memories of previous traumas (and the results of these traumas) are still of major importance as they reflect not only the past but also the continuous political and social changes in this region of the world.
Some of the most outstanding directors in the history of cinema come from Eastern Europe yet the cinema of the region as a whole is not well-known in the West. In this module we are going to see and discuss films that are widely recognised as outstanding or innovative and will place them in a European and global context through the framework of manipulating, constructing and regaining memory.
At the same time, the module provides a critical and theoretical introduction to film analysis focusing on narrative form, mise-en-scène, cinematography, editing and sound while providing students with analytical tools needed to interpret and write about films by identifying the elements of film art and the terminology to discuss film techniques.
