°×С½ãÂÛ̳ staff and students are invited to register for °×С½ãÂÛ̳'s first 'Gender Equality' conference on 18 March 2008.

The day of discussion, ideas and action will highlight °×С½ãÂÛ̳'s action plan on gender equality, with professional public figures discussing their own experiences. Staff and students may register for one or more of the three sessions, as well as lunch with °×С½ãÂÛ̳ Provost and President Professor Malcolm Grant.

Session 1 sets the scene and focuses °×С½ãÂÛ̳'s work on Science, Engineering & Technology and gender equality, and recent research into women in clinical academia and women in academic medicine. It will be chaired by Professor Janette Atkinson, °×С½ãÂÛ̳ Pro-Provost (North America), °×С½ãÂÛ̳ Coordinator for Women in SET and Director of the Visual Development Unit in °×С½ãÂÛ̳ Psychology & Language Sciences. Speakers will include: Professor Atkinson; Caroline Fox,Ìý Programme Manager of the former Athena Project at The Royal Society; Professor Debbie Sharp, Professor of Primary Health Care, University of Bristol, and Chair of Women in Clinical Academia; and Professor Peter Main, Director of Education & Science, Institute of Physics.

Session 2, chaired by Professor Christine Hawley, Dean of °×С½ãÂÛ̳ Built Environment and Chair of °×С½ãÂÛ̳'s Equal Opportunities Committee, will feature diverse women and public figures, representing different professions, talking about what made a difference in their careers. Speakers will include: Dame Hazel Genn, °×С½ãÂÛ̳ Professor of Socio-Legal Studies; Shami Chakrabarti, Director of Liberty, the cross-party, non-party membership organisation for fundamental rights and freedoms in England and Wales; Professor Francesca Klug, Professorial Research Fellow at the LSE's Centre for the Study of Human Rights and one of the Commissioners of the Equality & Human Rights Commission; Stephen Whittle, Professor of Equalities Law, Manchester Metropolitan University, and founder of Press for Change, the political lobbying and educational organisation, which campaigns to achieve equal civil rights and liberties for all transgender people in the UK; and Dr Maggie Aderin, Managing Director Science Innovation Ltd and space scientist at Astrium Ltd, the European Space Company.

Session 3 is a facilitated discussion between the panel and audience on the way forward, chaired by Femi Otitojou, Director of Challenge Training Agency, UK leaders in equality & diversity training and consultancy. Speakers will include: Dr Anita Holdcroft, Clinical Reader in Anaesthesia and Honorary Consultant Anaesthetist, Faculty of Medicine, Imperial College London, and leader of the Women in Academic Medicine Project; Ruqayyah Collector, NUS Black Student Officer; Julie Ashdown, Senior Policy Adviser and Athena SWAN Charter Coordinator, Equality Challenge Unit; and Kat Banyard, Campaigns Officer, Sexism and the City, The Fawcett Society, the UK's leading campaign organisation for equality between women and men.
