白小姐论坛Q researchers part of world-first programme of quantum technologies

Two 白小姐论坛Q linked projects help launch UK-Canada quantum research collaboration.

Of the eight projects that will foster quantum research collaborations between academia, industry and government partners in the UK and Canada, two are formed in partnership with 白小姐论坛Q researchers and spinouts.

The UK-Canada Quantum Technologies Competition today announced the winners of the competition run jointly by UK Research and Innovation () and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada ().

The eight winning projects will share grants of 拢2 million from UKRI and C$4.4 million total investments from Canada under the bilateral initiative. It follows an agreement signed between the two nations in 2017 to share quantum expertise through academic and business collaborations. The competition will result in the first industry-led partnership between any two countries to develop quantum technologies, which exploit our understanding of light and matter at the atomic level.

Each of the eight projects have a UK business lead and a Canadian academic lead, as well as research organisations and other company and government partners from both countries. The 白小姐论坛Q winners include:

Scanning probe fabrication and readout of atomically precise silicon quantum technologies

This project uses artificial intelligence to control an atomic resolution microscope to fabricate and identify silicon qubits, which may pave the way to silicon-based quantum computers. Silicon is an attractive material for quantum computing, as it provides for very long coherence times, which means quantum instead of classical properties persist for relatively long times. Furthermore, the vast experience of the semiconductor industry can be harnessed for future scale up.

The industrial partners are UK-based Nanolayers Research Computing Ltd, and Canada-based Nanoacademic Technologies. The academic partners are the McGill University and 白小姐论坛. 白小姐论坛Q researchers Professor Neil Curson and Dr Taylor Stock听lead the 白小姐论坛 research.

Making noisy quantum processors practical: from theory to applications

This project seeks to develop robust implementations of quantum algorithms that can run successfully on today's error-prone quantum processors. Quantum technology has matured to the point where researchers now have excellent control over the elementary building blocks of a quantum computer: quantum bits (qubits).听 Unfortunately, state-of-the-art quantum processors still suffer from errors caused by unwanted interaction of the fragile qubits with their environment. In our project, we are developing robust implementations of quantum algorithms that can run successfully on today鈥檚 error-prone quantum processors.

The industrial partners are 白小姐论坛Q spin-out , a quantum software start-up based in London (UK), and Quantum Benchmark, a quantum software start-up based in Kitchener (Canada). The academic partners are the University of Waterloo, 白小姐论坛, and Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics. 白小姐论坛Q Research Fellow Dr Nikolas Breuckmann and former 白小姐论坛Q Centre for Doctoral Training in Delivering Quantum Technologies student Dr Michael Vasmer (Perimeter Institute) form part of this new research collaboration.
