Overview
This online short course provides a comprehensive introduction to using ethnographic research in healthcare settings.
It covers:
- current understandings
- ethics and access in healthcare settings
- research design
- observational and interview-based methods of data collection
- data management and analysis
- writing up your research
Who this course is forÂ
The workshop is aimed at those who work in:
- academic research
- health and social care related charities
- policy groups and think tanks
You don't need any experience of conducting ethnographies to attend this course. Some knowledge about ethnography and/or qualitative research in general would be beneficial.
Course contentÂ
The following topics will be covered:
- The history of ethnography and its relationship to healthcare
- How to plan your ethnographic study
- Data collection and analysis
- Writing up and presenting your findings
Teaching and structureÂ
The course consists of:
- 8 recorded video presentations
- self-directed fieldwork for you to experience participant observation
- a live session over Zoom for discussion and networking
You'll have access to the presentations and guidance on fieldwork as soon as you register for the course. You should work through these before the live session.
You'll have access to the online resources for 1 week after the live session.

You'll receive a certificate of completion after attending the live session.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, you'll be able to:
- explain how ethnography can be used in healthcare research and improvement
- conduct fieldwork and observation
- understand the role of fieldnotes in capturing data
- analyse and write an ethnographic account
Cost and concessionsÂ
The standard cost of this course is £75.
A limited number of bursaries are available. If you feel you would benefit from this course but the cost presents a barrier, email qhrn@ucl.ac.uk with a brief statement (maximum 250 words) before registering. If you're selected, the fees for this course will be reduced to £30.
