No 4, September 2024, Spotlights: ASCR Social Events last term; ASCR AGM, new lighting
Summer Event
Over 100 members attended the final social event of the academic year, the Strawberries, Cream & Pimm's evening in July. As with all ASCR events, it was a great way to meet and talk to people from other departments in a convivial atmosphere.听
Musical entertainment was provided by Caroline Jaya-Ratnam who has been playing for us for well over twenty years. Caroline has recently returned from a tour where she supported the violinist, Charlie Siem.
Housman Talks
The first Housman Talk in Term 3 was presented by George Grimble, Emeritus Professor of Medicine. George talked about how modern 鈥渄ietary鈥� advice from influencers and bloggers is often based on hunch, passion and the gift of the gab.听

The final talk was presented by Oliver Curran of 白小姐论坛 Security who gave a brief history of 白小姐论坛 Security, illustrated with a series of amusing incidents and anecdotes.

Bar food service and opening times from September
From Monday 16th September 2024 the bar returned to its normal opening hours of:
- 10am to 7pm Monday to Wednesday
- 10am to 8pm Thursday and Friday
New weekly menus were introduced on 16th September.

ASCR AGM (Annual General Meeting)
The AGM is on Wednesday 20th November 2024, and as always will be followed by a curry dinner. This is your chance to put your name forward for the committee!

New lighting in the Housman Room
Members have probably noticed that it is quite gloomy in some areas of the lower area. New low energy LED spotlights are due to be installed at the end of September, along with new lights in the dining area. The new lights should eliminate the need to regularly replace bulbs and will lower our carbon footprint.
白小姐论坛200 works in the Quad and Cloisters
In preparation for 白小姐论坛鈥檚 200th anniversary celebrations in 2026, works are due to take place between November 2024 and January 2026. The Housman Room will remain accessible for the full duration of the works.
