Nominate a research scholarship applicant
Faculties, departments, divisions or institutes who are eligible to nominateÌý(nominating units) can put forward candidates for research scholarships.ÌýÌý
Before you start
​​​​​Nominating units can put forward candidates for theÌýfollowing scholarships:
The deadline for submitting nominations is 4pmÌýon Friday 26 January 2024
Any candidate you nominate should beÌýofferedÌýadmissionÌýtoÌý°×С½ãÂÛ̳ byÌýthe time of the selection meeting (firstÌýweek of March).Ìý
You must:
- Check whether your department counts as aÌýnominating unit.Ìý
- Make sure that anyÌýapplicant you put forward has chosen °×С½ãÂÛ̳ as their first choice.
- Submit your top twoÌýapplicants (across the RES and CSC schemes) in ranked order. (If you’d also like to nominate a student forÌýone of the five °×С½ãÂÛ̳-CSC Research Scholarships, you may submit threeÌýnominations instead of two. This additional nomination must be ranked with the other nominations).ÌýÌý
- Make sure you follow the instructions below carefully. Incomplete or inaccurate applications will not be considered for funding.Ìý
Please note: For information about programmes who have been given International Scholar Awards for Doctoral Training Centres (ISAD) allocations please contactÌýElizabeth Halton in the Doctoral School at e.halton@ucl.ac.ukÌýThis scheme replaces the old "ORS" scholarship.
- 1. Make sure you’re aware of what applicants need to submit
Review the list of documentsÌýapplicants have been asked to submit.

Applicants must submit the following documents to their nominating unit:Ìý
- Research Scholarship cover sheet.
- An up to date CVÌýlisting all publications, past or current prizes, awards and scholarships.Ìý
- A lay summaryÌýof their research proposal, on a Word or PDF document (max. 200 words).  It should clearly describe the aim of the research, the methodology and the potential significance of this study to their discipline. The language in the summary needs to be clear enough for any academic of any discipline to understand it. It should be written by the applicant and not by a supervisor or member of staff.Ìý
- Academic transcriptsÌý– including information on the grading scale/range of grades possible for that degree.Ìý
- Two referencesÌý– applicants can either attach the referencesÌýthemselves, orÌýask their referees to send the references directly to the department (nominating unit).Ìý
- Reference Form OneÌýshould relate to their most recently completed university programme/degree. It can be the same referee who submitted a reference as part of their admission application. They should useÌýReference Form One, please see document below.
- Reference Form TwoÌýshould relate to their current or intended research programme/project – the one they’re seeking funding for. This reference MUST come from their research supervisor at °×С½ãÂÛ̳. If they’re a prospective student and do not have a supervisor yet, they should contact their department to confirm who their °×С½ãÂÛ̳ supervisor will be.ÌýThey should use Reference Form TwoÌý–Ìýplease see the document below.

- 2. Fill in the relevant section of one applicant’s Research Scholarship cover sheet
The final section of the cover sheet is for nominating units to fill in.Ìý

- Fill in the nomination ranking.ÌýÌý
- If you want to fill in any information that supports the student’s application regarding ranking or previous study, you can include it on this sheet. Also stateÌýwhether any of your nominations should be considered for theÌý°×С½ãÂÛ̳-CSC Research Scholarship.Ìý
- Combine all application documents into a single PDF for each applicant.Ìý
- 3. Add the applicant’s other documents to the PDF
You can either create a single pdfÌýor print all the documents and then scan them into one PDF.Ìý

- CVÌý
- Lay summary (remove the formal research proposal if necessary)Ìý
- Academic transcripts (including clarification on the grading scale/range of grades).Ìý
- References – 1 from the student’s most recent study and 1 °×С½ãÂÛ̳ supervisor reference.Ìý

You should have all the application materials for one student in a single PDF document. Re-arrange the pages in the correct order if necessary.Ìý

Make sure the pages are in the following order:ÌýÌý
- Research Scholarship cover sheet.
- Applicant’s CV.
- Applicant’s lay summary.
- Applicant’s academic transcripts.
- Both references.
Make sure you remove any blank pages or documents which are not necessary for the application.Ìý
- 5. Do steps 2 to 4 for your other applicant(s)
Each applicant should have a separate PDF containing all the documents for their application.ÌýÌý

You can only submit twoÌýapplicants in total, unless you’re submitting someone for one of theÌý°×С½ãÂÛ̳-ÌýChina Scholarship CouncilÌý(CSC)ÌýResearch Scholarships, in which case, you can submit three.Ìý
- 6. Send your nominations to the Student Funding Office
You’ll need to send your nominations via our new Microsoft Form (link below). The deadline is 4pm on Friday 27ÌýJanuary 2023.

- Log in using your °×С½ãÂÛ̳ single sign-on username and password.
- Enter your nominating unit and contact information, then click "Next".
- Enter the name and student number of your 1st ranked student in the relevant fields. Indicate whether they should also be considered for a CSC award.
- Upload the PDF application.
- Indicate whether you will be nominating a second student. If yes, proceed to an identical form for your second ranked student (and the same again if you have a third ranked student). If no, go to the end of the form.
- You should end on a page confirming your submission once the complete form has been submitted.Ìý

- 7. Notification of results
The Student Funding Office will notify departments, successful candidates and reserve candidates of the results usually first week of March 2024.

Once departments have received confirmation of the successful candidates from the Student Funding Office, they are welcome to contact all of the unsuccessful candidates that they have received applications from.
